Lot description:

Mantinea

The coinage in honor of Antinoos donated by Vetour

Estimate: CHF 500.00

Oktassarion or Quinarius (AE, 34.92 g, 37 mm, 5), 134. Nude three-quarter bust of Antinoos to right, seen from the front. Rev. Horse walking to right. Blum 1. BMC 89 var. Extremely rare. Surfaces very heavily corroded, otherwise, nearly very fine.

Ex Numismatic Fine Arts V, 23 February 1978, 431. While often termed medallions, large Roman Provincial bronzes like this piece were surely meant to be used as money, even if they might also be saved as souvenirs or amulets. This piece is far bigger than any normal Roman sestertius of Hadrian (the following lot is, in fact, exactly the size of a contemporary sestertius) and clearly was meant to be of higher value. It seems best to term it an oktassarion, the bronze equivalent of a quinarius. The possibility that this coin was given an even higher official value can not be excluded, however. The inscription tells us that Vetourios gave these coins to the Arkadians, probably as a donation in honor of Antinoos. The horse is a symbol of Poseidon Hippios, the patron god of Mantinea.
